Andrea Dovizioso Bids Goodbye to MotoGP
This season of MotoGP has been full of excitement and unexpected events. After Suzuki decided to exit MotoGP from the next season, now three-time runner-up Andrea Dovizioso has announced his retirement from the premier motorcycle racing.
Andrea Dovizioso has announced his retirement next month after San Marino Grand Prix. Andrea has won 24 races across all the categories and is going out mid-season after he scored 10 points for his Yamaha RNF team.
In 2008, Dovizioso advanced to MotoGP and won 15 races there. He came in second place against Honda’s Marc Marquez in both 2018 and 2019, just missing out on the world championship. He competed with Honda from 2008 to 2011 before making his debut with Yamaha in 2012 and continuing with Ducati until 2020.
The 2004 125cc segment world champion will be replaced by Yamaha’s test rider Cal Crutchlow for the remaining MotoGP races.
Andrea came up as a replacement for Morbidelli mid-season last year. According to Yamaha managing director Lin Jarvis, Andrea had great experience and expertise and would thus have been a favourable addition to the Yamaha RNF team. But as we witness Andrea’s performance, it is clear that he has been unable to get the maximum out of the R1’s potential on the track.
Even Andrea had confirmed that he has never been comfortable with the bike and he was unable to extract the maximum potential of R1 on track.
Dovizioso, who was so frequently Marc Marquez’s main rival during the Honda rider’s era of dominance in the competition, will depart MotoGP as one of the more distinguished athletes in recent seasons.
While Darryn Binder’s future at RNF Yamaha, which will become Aprilia next season, is uncertain, the team should get closer to signing Miguel Oliveira, who is anticipated to replace the departing Italian in the rider lineup for 2023, if Dovizioso’s retirement is confirmed.
We will see Andrea racing in the premier category for the last time at Misano, his home track on the 4th of September.
