Formula 1-Charles Leclerc tops session, Alpine get both cars in top 6

The Ferrari resurgence continues in the land down under. Max Verstappen finishes 2nd, and Alpine gets both cars in the top 6. The 2022 Australian Grand Prix delivered an interesting Formula 1 Free Practice 2 session. Read all about it below.

Ferrari on top, Redbull 2nd best

Leclerc once again managed to finish the session as the fastest car out there. beating his teammate and a charging Max Verstappen. The Ferraris however were separated by the Redbull of Max Verstappen on Friday as his Teammate Sergio Perez managed P5, behind Alonso in P4.

Alonso finds his speed!

Alpine replaced the Mercedes in the top 3 teams and they got both of their cars in the top 6!
Fernando Alonso managed to get in a great lap to put him just below the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz in P4.
Clearly, everyone was impressed by Alonso Lap

Estaban Ocon added to the good spirits at the Alpine garage as placed his car up in P6, just ahead of Valtteri Bottas.

 

Fireman Seb couldn’t save the Day

Sebastian Vettel was forced out of FP1 after smoke was billowing out from his car. But despite his team’s best efforts, they could not get his car ready in time for FP2. To add to his disappointing day, he also has a meeting with the Stewards after he rode a scooter on the track after FP1, a bit unfair, but the rules are the rules and his fate lies with the stewards now.

Aston Martin was the cause of a Red Flag in FP2 as well when the piece of the body fell off Lance Strollโ€™s car.

The Aston Martin driver too will face the wrath of the stewards and they will investigate two instances of impeding against him.

Is Mercedes now a midfield team?

Mercedes failed to get either of the cars in the top 10 as they struggle to get to grips with the new regulations. Hamilton ran wide but managed to control his car before causing any major damage. He finished the session below Tsunoda in 13thand his teammate George Russell continued to perform better in the Mercedes Machinery as he finished 11th.

 

Bottas managed to outqualify the Mercedes and Mclaren as well. He has won the Australian GP the last time out in 2019 and he looks like a completely different driver this time around. It will be interesting to see how he takes on the Grand Prix.
His Teammate Zhou finished in P 17 as the rookie is still managing to match his more experienced Teammate.

Mclaren back on track ?

The Mclaren team struggled with the slowest cars on the grid at the start of the season. However in just the 3rd race, it looks like the team might be moving on the right path. Both of their cars managed to break into the top 10 and homeboy Daniel Ricardo will be looking to get the crowds on their feet on sunday.

HAAS Struggles

Kevin Magnussen reported that he was feeling sick today morning. A Haas spokesperson told GPFans: โ€œKevin experienced some nausea during the night and earlier this morning. As a result, he will not be attending the FIA press conference this morning to recuperate and be ready for FP1 this afternoon. He has been seen by the team doctor and is expected to participate on-track today.โ€
This added to a rough day at the Track for the struggling team as they finished second last, just above the 2 Williams cars.
