Formula E to have more efficient and faster cars

Formula E has unveiled its new style for the future and unveiled the Gen3 race vehicle ahead of this weekend’s Monaco E-Prix. Next season, the next edition of the all-electric racer will make its competitive debut, and it is expected to be more powerful, quicker, and more efficient than its predecessor, with an even greater focus on sustainability.

Street races are a mainstay of Formula E, which is intended on bringing all-electric racing to the masses in city centres. As a result, the championship has been developed and optimised exclusively for street racing.

It’s the first formula vehicle with front and back powertrains, with the front 250kW motor operating in tandem with the rear 350kW motor. It also doubles the regenerative capability of current Gen2 automobiles, with a combined 600kW. Regenerative braking will generate more than 40% of the energy utilised in a race. Because of the front powertrain’s regenerative potential, rear hydraulic brakes are no longer required.

In comparison to the present Gen2 vehicles, which have a power output of 250kW (340hp), the upcoming Gen3 cars will have a power output of 350kW. (476hp). It’s also substantially lighter, weighing only 760 kg (without the drivers). All of this corresponds to a peak speed of 320 kilometres per hour. According to Formula E, electric motors can convert 95 per cent of their energy into mechanical power; by comparison, a comparable internal combustion engine is reported to have a power efficiency of 40 per cent. The new car is also slimmer and has a shorter wheelbase, which Formula E hopes will result in more competitive racing.

The competition isn’t just on the track; with the introduction of the Gen3 cars, the attention has shifted to software engineering as an area where teams can compete for crucial performance increases. Performance enhancements will be given through software updates to the vehicle’s operating system.

Seven manufacturers have committed to the Gen3 era of Formula E, including Mahindra Racing from India, as well as Jaguar, DS Automobiles, Nissan, Porsche, and NIO 333 from other countries.

Maserati will compete in Formula E for the first time next year, partnering with Venturi Racing. Mercedes EQ will exit the competition at the conclusion of this season, but McLaren may buy the team.

Season 9, which will usher in the Gen3 era, has been postponed in order to allow the teams more time to prepare, and will now begin in January 2023. A Formula E race will most likely take place next year, between January and March 2023, at a new street circuit in Hyderabad.
