Max wins thrilling Spanish GP, Leclerc retires, Russell snatches P3 – Formula 1

Max Verstappen beat all the odds and he now leads the Formula 1 world championship. He suffered through an early spin, and DRS issues but he did get help from his teammate, more on that later. But Charles Leclerc was forced to retire after taking an early lead. Contrary to what people said, the Spanish Grand Prix was anything but boring.

Ferrari Engine Problems

The race saw a great amount of drama, but not a single safety car. Charles Leclerc was forced to retire on lap 27 much to the disappointment of the Tifosi. He was in a comfortable lead and he looked like he could win the race. We are awaiting more information on the engine problem, but it will be interesting to know what it was because Zhou Guanyu was forced to retire too, and the Alfa Romeo car uses a Ferrari engine.

Rebull Team Effort?

The Redbull cars finished in 1&2 for the second time this season. This came after great drives from Verstappen and Perez. Verstappen was behind Leclerc for the initial stages of the race, however, he spun out and went into the gravel trap at turn 4 after a gust of win unsettled his car, that sounds like a problem that boats face, but this is F1 and the smallest details matter.

But Max had bigger fish to fry after a DRS issue meant that he had an erratic use of his DRS Wing. It was working in some laps and it clothes it just didn’t. But he powered through and managed to overtake the Mercedes of George Russell who managed to lead the Formula 1 race for a couple of laps.

However, Max pitted onto a fresher set of tyres and he managed to pass the Mercedes. Max did have it a bit easier when the Redbull Team asked Perez to move aside to allow max to overtake. And that’s an interesting story to keep following this season as it plays out.
It’s pretty early and we can already see Redbull issuing team orders? Perez was unhappy at the end of the race, with his radio broadcast saying “ I’m happy for the team, but we need to speak after the race” cant wait to find out what that is about.

Is Mercedes Back?

George Russell managed yet another podium place finish this season. The Mercedes driver was phenomenal since the lights went out and he had a great race defending the Redbulls and frustrating them as they failed to pass him easily.

The driver of the day was Lewis Hamilton. The 7-time world champion started strong, but first lap contact with Kevin Magnussen caused a puncture which put him right at the back of the grid. He sounded dejected over the radio and he wanted to retire the car to save the engine. But his team did not give up. They urged him to continue and he managed to eat his way through the field and finish the race in P5. he would have finished in P4, but the Mercedes car faced a problem which meant that he had to slow down at the end of the race to avoid potentially blowing up the car. Carlos Sainz pleases the fans

Carlos Sainz didn’t have the best start to his race. He managed to finish in P4, but an early spin, in the same corner that Max Verstappen had caused him to fall back down the order. Hamilton’s late problems meant that the Spanish driver could capitalise and make the fourth position his, much to the happiness of the fan who thronged in large numbers to witness the greatest motorsports event in the world.

While most of the cars in the top 10 chose to go for 3 stop race, The alfa Romeo team stuck to their 2 stop, and Valtteri bottas had no tyre life left at the end to fight the other cars. He finished in a great P6, but he could’ve been higher if he had another set of tyres maybe.

Esteban Ocon finished in P7 and his teammate and hometown hero Fernando Alonso finished in P 9.
Keep in mind that Alonso started from the back of the grid! He took a new engine for his car since he was starting at the back it looks like it paid off.

Lando Norris finished in P 8 and his teammate finished in 12. Yuki Tsunoda managed to sneak into the top 10 and finished 10th. while his teammate Gasly was in p 13.

The Aston Martin drivers finished 11th and 15th as they improved from their qualifying pace.

Mick Schumacher looked like he was in the right spot to get his first points, but he lost pace towards the end and finished the race in p 14. Kevin Magnussen could never really recover after his first lap incident and he finished just between the Williams cars right at the bottom.

What does this mean ?

But this win for max and this DNF for Leclerc, means that max now leads the world championship for the first time this year, it’s just a lead of 6 points, but hey, the finest margins count.
The impressive weekend by Redbull also means that Redbull now leads Ferrari in the Constructors championship, but Mercedes aren’t too far behind either. Butttt, this is the 6th race. Out of 22 for the season. That’s not even 30%. So things can change at any time, so you gotta stay tuned to fervent motorsports, to keep up with it all.
