In Monster Energy Supercross Round 10, Eli Tomac won for the third time in a row, but the rest of the results were marred by terrifying circumstances. When Tomac seized the lead from Jason Anderson on Lap 13 on Saturday night, he became the fourth rider to do it.
The mid-race head-to-head duel in Detroit was crucial since Anderson had beaten Tomac in a handful of prior meetings, most notably in Anaheim 3 and Arlington in two of the three features. This time, Tomac won — and things were only going to get worse for Anderson. Anderson’s front tyre washed out at a corner on Lap 18 and he crashed hard to the ground. He remounted only to go off the beaten path.
Tomac had a tight six-point lead after the Texas Triple Crown in Arlington two weeks ago, but the collision between second-place Anderson and Malcolm Stewart at Daytona drove both riders to the ground. They’d lose a spot as a result of the event, but the damage had already been done, and the points gap had grown to 18.
Stewart benefited from the late-race mayhem after a string of races featuring Anderson-related mishaps. Stewart surged from third to second at the checkers on Lap 17 and collected enough points to equal Anderson for second in the standings. Stwart has now finished in the top five in eight of the past nine Supercross races.
After finishing fifth or sixth in the past three rounds, Justin Barcia scored his fourth podium of the season. Surprisingly, he was riding with a hand injury sustained in a practice collision.
Marvin Musquin finished fourth, his highest placing since a third-place finish three races ago in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Justin Brayton finished fifth, his first top-five result in his final full season of Supercross.
Cooper Webb was battling for fourth on Lap 16 when he got a jump and his momentum stalled after hitting the front of the hill. Because he had nowhere else to go, Chase Sexton clipped Webb’s helmet. Sexton’s bike landed on him as he landed. Before finishing 20th, Webb remounted and rode slowly around the track one-handed for a few circuits.
Anderson and Sexton are said to be bruised, but otherwise unharmed. Webb’s status is yet to be determined.
Jett Lawrence dominated the 250 East feature for the whole 21 laps. Lawrence progressively increased his lead on a challenging circuit until he was halted by heavy traffic, allowing Pierce Brown to draw to within a second. Lawrence sped back out to a healthy lead after clearing the track, eventually winning by more than six seconds.
